Wrestler Bajrang Punia Conferred with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna
Ace Wrestler Bajrang Punia was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday. Punia, who has already booked the berth for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, was unavailable to receive the award from the President Ram Nath Kovind on National Sports Day.
The 25-year old Wrestler was honored with Padma Shri earlier this year. Punia won gold medals at the 2018 Asian Games, 2018 Commonwealth Games, and secured his second Asian Games Gold in 2019 in China. He has to satisfy with a bronze medal in World Wrestling Championships held at Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
“Any sportsperson feels good after receiving an award and it is the biggest sports award anyone can ask for. My sole focus is on the Olympics now. And the responsibility has increased. My preparations are going well. It’s been 10-12 days that I’m training on the mat and I’ve recovered from my injury. I’ll do my best in Tokyo and if I have everyone’s blessing, I’ll get the gold,” Bajrang Said after being conferred with the award.
Bajrang took to Twitter to pay gratitude after receiving the award. He tweeted,” The sweat-drenched costume, aching muscles&exhausted mind made me question myself every day. Today I realize it was all worth it. I thank our sports minister@KirenRijiju for honoring me with the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratan Award 2019 award.”
