Supreme Court Dismisses Curative Petition Of Nirbhaya Case Convicts
The Supreme Court has dismissed the curative petitions against the death penalty filed by two convicts-Vinay Kumar Sharma and Mukesh Singh in the Nirbhaya Rape and Murder Case. The death warrant for the 4 convicts was issued by a Delhi Court on January 7. The convicts are scheduled to be hanged on January 22 at 7 AM.
Asha Devi, the mother of Nirbhaya has expressed happiness over the decision of the Apex Court.
“This is a big day for me. I had been struggling for the last 7 years. But the biggest day will be 22nd January when they (convicts) will be hanged,” Asha Devi said after the Supreme Court’s decision.
Akshay Thakur Singh (31), Mukesh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), and Vinay Sharma (26) were found guilty of gang-raping, torturing, and killing of a young medical student (Nirbhaya) in Delhi on December 16, 2012. The Supreme Court in December 2019 dismissed the final review petition filed by one of the convicts against the death sentence.
Tihar Jail officials have started preparing for the execution and will seek service of a hangman from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Besides the four convicts, two more were accused in the case.
