President Ram Nath Kovind rejected the mercy petition filed by Nirbhaya’s case convict Vinay Sharma on Saturday. The convicts were scheduled to be hanged today as per the court orders dated January 17, but the Delhi court stayed the execution of four convicts till further orders.

Akshay Kumar Singh (31), Pawan Gupta (25), Late Ram Singh, a juvenile, and Vinay Sharma (26) were convicted for gang-raping, torturing, and murdering Nirbhaya in Delhi on December 16, 2012. Ram Singh committed suicide in Tihar Jail and the sixth (juvenile at the time of the crime) was released after serving three years in a juvenile correction facility.

Tihar Jail officials had started preparing for the execution and carried out a dummy execution of the four convicts on Friday. Tihar officials have sought service of a hangman from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.
