Indian National Congress on Thursday slammed PM Modi’s message to the people of Assam assuring them complete protection from the Citizenship Amendment Bill. Congress reminded PM that people in Assam can’t read your message, as the internet was suspended in 10 districts of Assam, post protests over CAB.

Our brothers & sisters in Assam cannot read your ‘reassuring’ message Modiji, in case you’ve forgotten, their internet has been cut off,” the Congress tweeted.

On Thursday morning, in a series of tweets PM Modi delivered a message to the people of Assam. He assured that their rights will be protected by the Central Government, and they don’t have to worry about Citizenship Amendment Bill.

I want to assure my brothers and sisters of Assam that they have nothing to worry after the passing of the CAB. I want to assure them- no one can take away your rights, unique identity and beautiful culture. It will continue to flourish and grow,” PM Modi tweeted.

The Central Government and I are committed to constitutionally safeguard the political, linguistic, cultural and land rights of the Assamese people as per the spirit of Clause 6,” PM Modi further added.

Violent protests have continued since Monday in parts of North-East, especially in Assam and Tripura. On Wednesday, the government has deployed the Army in both states to control the situation. Internet services were suspended in Tripura on Tuesday and in 10 districts of Assam on Wednesday. The state officials and the government has asserted that the bill will not affect the Northeastern states and people are being misled by the opposition.

The bill will provide Indian Citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Parsis, Buddhists, and Jains, from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, who faced religious persecution in those countries. The bill has been termed unconstitutional by the opposition and has faced violent protests in the North-Eastern states.

The bill was passed by Lok Sabha, shortly after midnight on Monday, with 311 votes in favor and 80 votes against the legislation. The Government introduced the bill in Rajya Sabha for discussion on Wednesday and passed after around 7 hours of discussion on the bill. In Rajya Sabha, 125 members voted in favor and 105 opposed the CAB, as BJP garnered the support of JDU, Shiromani Akali Dal, AIADMK, BJD, TDP, and YSR Congress.
