No Hanging of Nirbhaya Case Convicts On February 1, Delhi Court Stays Execution


Delhi Court stays execution of Nirbhaya Case convicts scheduled at 6 AM on February 1. The execution of the four convicts has been stayed till further orders. The verdict was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge, Dharmender Rana at Delhi’s Patiala House court. Delhi’s Court on January 17 revised the date of execution of convicts from January 22 to February 1.

The mother of the victim has vowed to continue her fight till the convicts are executed.

“The lawyer of the convicts, AP Singh has challenged me saying that the convicts will never be executed. I will continue my fight. The government will have to execute the convicts,” Asha Devi, mother of mother of Nirbhaya stated.

Akshay Kumar Singh (31), Pawan Gupta (25), Late Ram Singh, a juvenile, and Vinay Sharma (26) were convicted for gang-raping, torturing, and murdering Nirbhaya in Delhi on December 16, 2012. Ram Singh committed suicide in Tihar Jail and the sixth (juvenile at the time of the crime) was released after serving three years in a juvenile correction facility.

Tihar Jail officials had started preparing for the execution and carried out a dummy execution of the four convicts on Friday. Tihar officials have sought service of a hangman from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.
